Web hosting is the provision of space on the World Wide Web for your web site, so that anyone can access it over the Internet. The choice of company to host your site will depend on your requirements and your budget. There are 3 basic options to consider:
Free
The cheapest option is to use either the web space provided by your ISP or some other free space, which may include advertising. The address (URL) of your web site may be long and not really relevant to the subject of your site. This option is not suitable for commercial use.
Intermediate
The next step up is to use a free host, as above, but with your own domain name. You will need to pay for a forwarding service to link your name to the real location of your web site. This is not an ideal set-up but can work reasonably well if done properly.
Professional
The professional option means paying someone to host your web site and control your domain name, so that everything is integrated. This has many advantages and may cost little more, depending on requirements.
The exact features provided by different forwarding and hosting companies vary considerably. It is worth taking the time to find the right company for you, paying particular attention to any restrictions or charges for transferring your domain elsewhere.
